HOW IMPORTANT IS WELL MAINTENANCE?

Commonly, cleaning a well is put off until trouble develops. Maintenance is deferred until the capacity has dropped off considerably or the pump is breaking suction. When the perforations and the outlying formation become so clogged that the above mentioned happens, bringing the well back to even adequate capacity is a major one. Redevelopment with quantities of chemicals are required.

Parts of the formation around the perforations can be partly or wholly clogged making it hard to get all the chemicals through the perforations to dissolve the unwanted deposits.

Timely maintenance can improve the performance of the well and extend the life of the well. Depending on the characteristics of the water in your region, this should lead you to some logical steps towards a preventative maintenance program.

Two keys to remember with well maintenance are (1) realize that from time to time certain responsibilities are needed to be performed to maintain the performance of the well. The perforations are the heart of all wells and play the most important part, lack of care can cause loss of well or expensive repair. (2) Keep records of your well to determine what's going on under ground that you can't see. Be sure to get static water level, pumping rate, drawdown and pressure test. All information that you can attain will keep you informed of any possible problems before they become serious, which will save you money.

The cost for new well construction is expensive, and with the government tightening down on loans and grants and the time involved in getting one, it is more important today to implement a preventive maintenance program in every well to insure that you will not be without water under any circumstances.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

(1) REDUCE WEAR AND TEAR OF PUMPING EQUIPMENT.

(2) MAINTAIN A PROPER FLOW OF WATER THROUGH THE WELL.

(3) EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE WATER WELL.

(4) REDUCE ELECTRICAL POWER CONSUMPTION, SAVING YOU MONEY
THAT COULD OVERRIDE THE COST OF THE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM.
